HNPA Receives Award Westland Mayor, Sandra Cicirelli, publicly recognized the Holliday Nature Preserve Association for our partnership with the City in assisting with Rouge Rescue 2004. Dorothy Smiley, Barb Pollack, Phil Crookshank and Bill Craig received certificates on behalf of the many volunteers involved with that event. Mayor Cicirelli also recognized City workers and Westland citizens that worked so hard that day. HNPA accepted this award on behalf the many volunteers and groups from many different communities that help make a positive impact in the Preserve. 2005 Project Planning There are a number of projects HNPA can undertake next year. They include: -- Rouge Rescue 2005, an Earth Day/Arbor Day; -- Continuing the mowing Foxlands property (off Koppernick Road) -- Trail clearing -- Replacing the old plank footbridge over Deer Creek on the Beech Trail. This bridge finally collapsed and floated downstream. The Beech Trail cannot be used as a loop unless that bridge is replaced. HNPA will discuss this project with Wayne County Parks and the Ford Motor Company volunteers. Please consider lending a helping hand when it comes time to put some sweat into the Preserve. Kids with parents are always welcome! Ellsworth Bridge Update As part of the Wayne County Parks Millage, we’ve been told the Ellsworth Bridge (across from Nankin Mills) was going to get rebuilt in 2004. Nothing has been done although Bill Craig, HNPA President reports that a nice drawing of the new bridge is available. He has doubts as to whether that bridge becomes reality in 2005. Hix Park Map Planned Bill Craig, Westland Park’s Director, Bob Kosowski, and landscape architect, Marc Russell had a meeting on Novmber 22, to discuss a new map for Westland’s Hix Park. Westland is willing to invest in a quality map to assist Hix Park users walk about without wandering off into the Holliday Preserve. Mr. Russell will create a map using the latest technology and GPS. The plan is to have a handout map available at the Recreation center and Nankin Mill. HNPA will post it on our website. A large map may be displayed at the park entrance. HNPA looks forward to working with Westland to make Hix Park a pleasant nature walk.
